Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine have released a study (29 July 2009) stating that “organic food has no nutritional or health benefits over ordinary food”. The basis of the study was that consumers were paying higher prices for organics because of its perceived health benefits, creating a global organic market worth an estimated $48 billion in 2007 and the researchers wanted to determine if the nutritional benefits of organic food were real.

“A small number of differences in nutrient content were found to exist between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs, but these are unlikely to be of any public health relevance,” said Alan Dangour, one of the report’s authors.

All seed can be traced back to common sources. It’s believable that the nutritional value of organics is comparable with conventional foods. What this study totally misses is that most eco-minded consumers are not necessarily eating organics for the perceived better nutritional value. Most eco-minded consumers eat organic food so that they are not filling their bodies with chemicals from pesticides and herbicides. Let’s look at this organic food research more closely. The very first page of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine organic food report states:

“This review does not address contaminant content (such as herbicide, pesticide and fungicide residues) of organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs or the environmental impacts of organic and conventional agricultural practices.”

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine organicsstudy does not even address one of the major reasons organics are consumed. All the media reports I have read thus far do not mention this fact. This study and it’s media coverage is a good lesson to all. Don’t just assume that because someone tells you that “research shows…” that what they are saying is accurate. Its up to us as consumers to be informed. It is very easy for consumers to find these studies online and read them in their entirety. An informed consumer will be able to make informed decisions. An uninformed consumer can be easily manipulated when given only partial facts. I, for one, will continue to consume organic food for my main reason – I have no desire to ingest pesticides and herbicides into my body.

Most coffee lovers when presented with so many different blends to choose from don’t usually question the origins of their favorite beverage or what is the environmental impact of their favorite brew. But today there is a growing awareness of the need to protect natural resources as much as possible. Because of this awareness more and more coffee companies are offering organic blends in part to lessen their impact on the environment and in part to capitalize on the organic craze and meet market demands.

Why Organic

Because coffee is grown so far away from it’s end user, most people don’t know that one of the by products of coffee production is a large quantity of pesticides. The coffee plants are “protected” by very strong pesticides and these pesticides then leach into the ground water and surrounding soils. These strong pesticides kill off plant and animal life. After harvesting the coffee beans are treated with even more chemicals during processing.

Organic coffee is grown differently. The coffee producers don’t treat the plants with chemicals. They are grown under the shade of indigenous trees that provide homes for the local birds and other small animals. These birds then in turn eliminate the need for pesticides by feasting on the bugs that the pesticides would kill. By purchasing organic coffee you can do your part providing habitat for birds and animals that would otherwise not have a home.

Surprisingly, organic coffee is not priced so high that the average person can’t afford it like so many other organic products. The majority of coffee producers offer organic blends from the milder breakfast blends to the richer, darker dessert blends at an affordable price, which is in reach for most of their customers.

Organic coffee is available to purchase at most local grocery stores. Local health food stores have had organically grown coffee for several years, but now it is readily available at the supermarket. Almost every major producer has an organic, so there shouldn’t be a problem in finding an organic alternative to fit your tastes perfectly. If you are a coffee lover already then you can do your part to help the environment by switching to organic coffee today. If you aren’t a coffee lover you can buy your coffee loving friends organically grown coffee and help out the environment at the same time.
