With the increasing amount of news stories about living a ‘greener’, more ‘eco-friendly’ life, it is easy to get lost in all the information given about this topic. Fear not, it is easier than you think to become more ‘green’, and at the same time, save some extra cash to spend on the things that are worth spending money on.

By using simple steps, it is clear to see how you can save money on your heating, electric and water bills. The following steps will show you how you can join the increasing amount of people who are living a more ‘greener’, more ‘eco-friendly’ lifestyle.

Easy ways to save electricity.

Turn TV’s, DVD players, games consoles off at the plug when not in use. Some appliances use up to 90% of their power when on standby, so switch them off at the plug to save electricity and money. Line dry clothes to save energy from your tumble drier. Tumble driers are the second biggest energy user in the home after the fridge. If the weather is poor, you can always use a clotheshorse to dry your clothes.

Use energy efficient lighting around the home. Although energy efficient lighting seems expensive at present, energy efficient light bulbs can last up to 10 times longer, and use only 25% of energy used by standard lighting. In the long run, the bulbs will pay for themselves.

Easy ways to save water.

By turning taps off when shaving and when brushing your teeth, you can save at least 6 litres of water per minute. If your taps leak, you could be wasting up to 5,500 litres of water per year, so always replaced your taps faulty washers.

Storing water in the fridge will stop you running the tap for long periods to get cold water.

Switch to watering the garden with a watering can. You can water your plants directly at the base so that the water goes straight to their roots, not on the leaves. Remember to water your plants in the evening to reduce evaporation.

Easy ways to save heat.

Turning your boiler thermostat down by 1 degree, you can save up to 10% on your heating bill each year. With an average heating bill, this could be as much as £90 per year!

Use energy saving window blinds to help trap warm air inside the home in cold weather, and direct sunlight out during hot weather. These types of blinds are around the same price as standard blinds, and can help you save money on your heating bills. Why would anyone want to waste money on blinds that increase your heating bill?

Stop your boiler from overworking by switching radiators off in unused rooms, or rooms that are used less often than others.

By following these simple steps, it is easy for anyone to save energy, and save some extra cash to buy the things that are actually worth buying.

I used to get a really bad headache every evening after dinner. I would just be settling down after tidying up and BAM! headache pain like someone was tightening a vice grip around my head.

For months I varied the foods we ate, yet nothing seemed to help. Almost every night I could count on getting that evening headache after eating. I couldn’t figure out why it didn’t happen after breakfast or lunch. What was so special about dinner? I was at my wits end.

So I decided to do something creative. One evening I asked my husband to do everything I normally did. From food prep, to cooking, serving and cleaning. I sat far away and watched the entire process. Voila! No headache!

So, we got even more creative and I slowly introduced each task back one by one.

Food prep – no headache.

Cooking – no headache.

Serving – no headache.

Eating – no headache.

Cleaning up – HEADACHE!

Voila, I had found the reason for my headache. I always cleaned up the entire day’s dishes in the evening. That’s why I was only experiencing headaches right after dinner. Occasionally my husband would clean the dishes, but as I thought back, on those nights I wouldn’t get the headache.

I immediately removed all my cleaning products and replaced them with natural, organic cleaning products. I have not had a headache like that since.

Many of the standard household cleaners on market these days are full of toxic chemicals. The makers of these products claim that these chemicals are required to “get it really clean” and are in small enough amounts that they aren’t “toxic”. Imagine, if we added up all of the “small amounts of chemicals” in each of the cleaners we use each day. What is the total chemical load we’re subjected to each day? It has to be pretty high.

For example, Sodium Hydroxide is an ingredient in many cleaning and personal care products. Sodium Hydroxide can cause burns in tissue, chronic skin irritation, respiratory tract irritation, as well as liver & kidney damage. Sodium Hydroxide can be found in almost every standard household cleaner that you will find at your grocery store. It’s also found in some toothpastes, shaving creams and other skin care products. We’re putting that into our mouths?!

Many of us are trained by advertising to think that we need antibacterial lotions and soaps. Did you know that many of these cleaners contain Triclosan, a form of Dioxin. Triclosan has been linked with weakened immune systems, decreased fertility, hormone disruption and birth defects. Regular soap kills 99.4% of germs while antibacterial soap kills 99.6%. Is that 0.2% extra really worth it?

Dishwasher detergents contain a form of highly concentrated chlorine that is poisonous and can produce skin irritations or burns, cause eye injuries and damage to other mucous membranes. Guess what? Residue built up on dishes and can transfer onto your food. Yummmm (not!). Buy phosphate and chlorine free detergents instead.

Bathroom cleaners are highly toxic particularly since they are used in small confined spaces spaces. Many of these cleaners contain hydrochloric acid which is corrosive to skin and eyes, and damages kidneys and liver. Also some contain hypochlorite bleach which is corrosive to eyes, skin and respiratory tract, and known to cause vomiting and pulmonary edema if inhaled. These cleaners also contain benzene, methanol, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene which are all known carcinogens that damage the nervous system and cause birth defects. Did you know that pure vinegar and borax are just as effective cleaners?

I had heard people talk about “going green” for years, but it wasn’t until I realized that these chemical-laden household cleaning products where damaging my body that I chose to change. This personal scare made me wonder what subtle damage these chemicals were also doing — damage that I wouldn’t see for years to come, and then only in the form of cancer or another debilitating disease.

My house is now totally “green” when it comes to natural and organic household cleaning products. I find that my health and well-being are worth it.

Researchers from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine have released a study (29 July 2009) stating that “organic food has no nutritional or health benefits over ordinary food”. The basis of the study was that consumers were paying higher prices for organics because of its perceived health benefits, creating a global organic market worth an estimated $48 billion in 2007 and the researchers wanted to determine if the nutritional benefits of organic food were real.

“A small number of differences in nutrient content were found to exist between organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs, but these are unlikely to be of any public health relevance,” said Alan Dangour, one of the report’s authors.

All seed can be traced back to common sources. It’s believable that the nutritional value of organics is comparable with conventional foods. What this study totally misses is that most eco-minded consumers are not necessarily eating organics for the perceived better nutritional value. Most eco-minded consumers eat organic food so that they are not filling their bodies with chemicals from pesticides and herbicides. Let’s look at this organic food research more closely. The very first page of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine organic food report states:

“This review does not address contaminant content (such as herbicide, pesticide and fungicide residues) of organically and conventionally produced foodstuffs or the environmental impacts of organic and conventional agricultural practices.”

The London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine organicsstudy does not even address one of the major reasons organics are consumed. All the media reports I have read thus far do not mention this fact. This study and it’s media coverage is a good lesson to all. Don’t just assume that because someone tells you that “research shows…” that what they are saying is accurate. Its up to us as consumers to be informed. It is very easy for consumers to find these studies online and read them in their entirety. An informed consumer will be able to make informed decisions. An uninformed consumer can be easily manipulated when given only partial facts. I, for one, will continue to consume organic food for my main reason – I have no desire to ingest pesticides and herbicides into my body.

It’s the place eco-minded consumers shop. BeCoolShopGreen.com scouts out news about organics and the eco-friendly lifestyle to ensure readers can be informed.

 $182.29

The majority of our domestic rubbish ends up in a landfill site. and we are rapidly running out of future landfill sites.

Much of the rubbish that goes into these sites is vegetable peelings, cardboard, shredded paper and garden waste – all organic matter. These landfill sites get squashed down and eventually the organic matter is converted to methane gas which has implications in the climate change we hear so much about.

We are already being pushed, to separate our waste rather than it all going together in one bin. This is because we have to reduce, recylce and reuse as much waste as possible and reduce the amount that goes to landfill. Also remember, there are continuing threats that before long we will be charged for rubbish collections, based on their weight. About 40% of your rubbish is suitable for composting, so think of the difference you could make.

Many local councils now operate separate collections for different types of waste and this is helping greatly with the landfill issue. So by separating your rubbish and letting the council recycle what they can, you are helping the environment but why not help yourself and for a little effort save money and feed your garden better. Also, if you rely solely on council initiatives, you are still sending items to landfill that you can recycle at home into wonderful compost.

Home composting would mean that you send no organic matter to landfill, so making your personal impact on the environment. Not only that but it would mean that you had your own source of a wonderful soil additive for your garden and a wonderful medium for potted plants. No more having to buy expensive compost at the garden centre, not to mention manoeuvring the heavy bags in and out of your car.

That horrid ‘rubbish’ that is organic matter is broken down by microbes and worms working together and turning it into a wonderful dark, rich compost – full of nutrients for your plants and vegetables and really pleasant to handle. It is such a ‘waste’ to throw away materials when you can use them to improve your garden so easily.

If you are at all interested in organic gardening, you have to make and use your own compost, it is an essential ingredient. Getting started is simple, just look round your garden and pick a small area in which to keep your compost.

Making compost is not complicated, you just need to provide all the right ingredients and nature will do the rest. However you will make it better and more efficiently, with just a little knowledge. Your only investment is a little time, and your rewards can be enormous. Not only will you enrich your soil and improve the health of your plants, you will be contributing to the solution of a massive community problem.

A few weeks ago I saw a commercial on TV for bug spray – a pressurized can full of a chemical capable of killing all manner of crawling critters including cockroaches. Now anyone who has lived in a high-rise will know that, unless squished, these things are just about indestructible. So anything capable of knocking them out must be potent.

No matter, the product was presented in bright green livery and, with great fanfare, was declared ‘environmentally friendly’. Now, lets be reasonable. How could the spraying of a chemical capable of killing cockroaches and toxic enough to have a red poison sticker on the side of the container possibly be green?

The spin was this. The active ingredient in the spray is a pyrethroid, a chemical compound that occurs naturally in some plant species. The plants are able to manufacture the chemical in their leaves to deter insects that want to eat them. So, because the pyrethroid is natural it has to be green. If it is in plants then it must be OK to use in the environment and must be environmentally friendly.

This is very shaky logic. We could use it to say that a tsunami, volcanic eruptions or uranium occur naturally, ergo, they are environmentally friendly. You see the point.

Greenwash is the common term for this practice of bending the truth in marketing to give a positive environmental spin. The standard definition of greenwash is where companies spin their products and policies as environmentally friendly even when they are not. The related term ‘green sheen’ describes organizations that use their PR and marketing departments to try and show that they are adopting practices that are beneficial to the environment.

It is hard to see how the spraying of a chemical that will harm insects is friendly to the environment. Remember that insects perform any number of useful tasks from pollination to the recycling of nutrients in the soil. Yet this kind of product greenwashing occurs all the time for all kinds of products and services.

A recent report by the marketing company TerraChoice found that in a random survey of over 1,000 products almost all the marketing was tainted by greenwash. Amazingly the average number of green products per store has almost tripled in three years since 2006.

You can check out the report here.

As concerned consumers, what do we do in the face of this onslaught of the new green? How do we make good choices among the wave of products that claim to be environmentally friendly? Here is a tip: Think about the bigger picture.

If a product is friendly to the environment its use and manufacture must have at least a neutral effect. This is tricky to achieve in modern mass production. Try to imagine what went in to making the product or what using the product will do to the environment.

The reason that uranium mining can never be green is that a toxic material is exposed, concentrated and held in a potentially volatile state. This does not mean that it cannot or should not be used in power plants to generate electricity; just that it cannot be called green (even though it has no carbon emissions). The bigger picture is very different to the narrow one of low emissions.

It may be necessary to use chemicals in concentrations strong enough to be an insecticide. Deltamethrin, an insecticide based on the pyrethroids in the bug spray, has been used in Africa to rid large areas of the tsetse fly, a carrier of a parasite that causes sleeping sickness in humans and cattle. A similar process, using the more toxic and persistent DDT, eradicated malaria from the US in the early 1950’s – more that 4,650,000 homes were sprayed. These actions improved human health and economic prosperity but they were not environmentally friendly.

So when you see a green label on a product or actors dancing through sunny fields in a commercial for a bug spray think about what it really means. Are the claims real? You may decide to purchase the product, but do so because you need to get rid of bugs and not because you believe the product to be environmentally friendly.

Chances are that the green label is just a label that is green, and nothing more.

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle. Many are familiar with what this catchy little phrase means but how many people are actually incorporating this mantra into their lives? As times change people are always on the go or not truly thinking about their actions when it comes to sustaining our planet. There is a big movement in purchasing eco-friendly and organic products but there are some other things to do to show just how eco-friendly you truly are. Here are 5 ways to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle and to contribute to the overall health of our planet.

#1 Turn off the faucet: This has been a message since our childhood but not many people follow this simple rule. In order to save water turn the faucet off when brushing your teeth or washing your face. There really is no need for the water to be running and if we all turned off the faucet we each could save over a thousand gallons of water.

#2 Reuse plastic sandwich bags: This is something not many people think about but if done can save a lot of money and reduce the amount of plastic bags pilling up in landfills. Think about it, why throw away a perfectly good sandwich bag when it could be used again. If it gets a bit messy inside it can simply be rinsed out with water, but not too much water!

#3 Aluminum water bottles vs. plastic water bottles: If you have not already noticed, many people are sporting the new water bottle around town. Instead of the old plastic water bottles people are now really digging the aluminum bottles. Why you ask. Well not only are they attractive and convenient, they are also eco-friendly. Having just one aluminum water bottle significantly reduces the amount of plastic water bottles an individual purchases annually. These aluminum water bottles come in many different styles and there are even some made just for kids. If you don’t have your own aluminum water bottle be sure to purchase one soon!

#4 Unplug unused appliances: Not many people think to do this on a regular basis but take a look, is your cell phone charger still plugged in even though your phone isn’t being charged? Most likely it is! This is one thing that people don’t think to do even though it still uses so much energy just being plugged into the wall. So, if you aren’t using your cell phone charger, your toaster, blender, hair appliance, or even your TV unplug it!

#5 Change your light bulb: Many people are still using traditional light bulbs to light their homes and offices but there are better ones out there. Compact fluorescent light bulbs or energy efficient light bulbs are the new buzz. The reason behind this is because of how much less energy is used when using these light bulbs. Not only do they use less energy they also last longer than traditional light bulbs. They are generally more expensive than traditional ones but can you really put a price on saving your earth?

These are five simple ways we can actually Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle in our fast pace world. It doesn’t take much effort to make these simple changes and with these changes we can improve our health and the health of our earth. Being eco-friendly has never been so easy!

Styrofoam, also known as polystyrene, is a plastic that can be found everywhere but unfortunately is also very hard to recycle. You may have already discovered that your recycling company won’t take it, like most. The reason for this is the petroleum-derived material it’s made from takes a long time to break down, is highly flammable and can kill animals if they accidentally eat it. For these reasons, I find it amazing that this material is used in so many different places, especially in the food industry.

You may also see different products that are made from Styrofoam but don’t appear to be. If you’re not sure, you can always look for the number 6 stamped in the recycling symbol somewhere on the product. Since it will probably be a long time before many people stop using Styrofoam, it’s a good idea to know what to do with it in the mean time. The easy thing to do is just stop using it or avoid buying products made from Styrofoam. Unfortunately, you can’t stop other people from shipping you items that you buy filled with those “peanuts” that are made from polystyrene or some other filler made from the same.

To start with, if you do have Styrofoam products or items currently, avoid throwing it into your garbage and look for ways to recycle it. As I mentioned early, this may be hard to do. Styrofoam can be recycled though but is normally recycled to make more of the same. If you’ll looking to keep the Styrofoam you do have out of the garbage pile, here are a few tips you can use:

* Keep the Styrofoam for packaging. You may need to ship something later and keeping the Styrofoam you do have will definitely help your package stay safe. Just break larger chunks of Styrofoam into smaller pieces and keep them in a bag. If you have smaller pieces that may get lost around the house, wrap it up using plastic shopping bags you may still have laying around.

* Give it to other people who can use it for shipping. You can give it to your friends and family for shipping their items especially, like my mother, for people who like to sell items on eBay. You can also find craft stores who take styrofoam for various craft projects. You can even use polystyrene in planters as filler which improves water drainage.

* Recycle it. Searching online for different companies that will recycle it is the easiest way to find someone who will take it to recycle. Some recyclers will even allow you to mail it to them, if there aren’t any in your area. You may even earn a little money from these recyclers if you have a bunch of Styrofoam for them.

The best option is prevention so the first thing you should do, as I mentioned earlier, is to not buy any and look for companies, if the information is available, who use other products to fill their boxes for shipping. Many of us do find it hard to avoid though and the above tips should help you in knowing what to do with this un-ecofriendly material.

 $40.46

Here are six simple tips to help you to Go Green and save money at the same time. In part two of this series we will focus primarily on saving energy using our transportation resources.

First, the most obvious tip. Walk whenever possible, ride public transportation, carpool, and as a last resort drive your car. Can you walk to work? Can you walk to the bus or train? Maybe you will need to allow a few minutes of additional time in the morning to walk to the train or bus, but think of the savings if everyone else does the same. If you happen to be relocating, consider moving close to where you work. Suburban sprawl has made it difficult to walk anywhere. Of course property costs more in the city or nearby, but you also must consider your transportation costs. Recently as the cost of gasoline hit record levels, many people began questioning their long commute to work, and the wisdom of living so far away.

Consider moving to a smaller house or apartment. One of the big advantages to moving further away from the city is being able to afford a larger dwelling for the same amount of money. What many people did not consider was the rising costs for heating and air conditioning for these mansions. As energy costs will likely continue to rise for the foreseeable future, these properties will become less desirable with buyers looking for more energy efficient homes.

Keep your car tires inflated properly according to pressure setting in the owner’s manual. Most automobiles have a sticker on the door frame that lists the correct inflation pressure for the tires. Do not use the pressure setting found on the sidewall of the tires as this is the maximum pressure and not the recommended value. The recommended value is set by the automobile designer based on the weight of the vehicle and should be followed closely. Under inflated tires cause more rolling resistance and waste fuel. Over inflated tires wear out more quickly and result in a rougher ride. Having the tires balanced and rotated regularly will prolong the life of the tires and save you money at the same time.

Consider purchasing a scooter or motorcycle if you make most of your trips alone. Some regions of the country work better than others for this, particularly the warmer climates. The fuel savings will be amazing. A special license may be required in your area. If you are new to riding, please take one of the weekend safety courses. The course will enhance your enjoyment of riding and might even save your life.

Buy in bulk as much as possible to help avoid unnecessary packaging and smaller containers. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Americans generate some 80 million tons of waste from packaging, labeling and empty containers. That’s about one third of the country’s overall total for solid waste! When you buy in bulk you save considerably in packaging, labeling and containers. And guess what – by buying in bulk you saving money at the same time.

Recycle your printer ink cartridges wherever possible. Some printer manufacturers have schemes to help with this. Use them! Over 200 million used printer ink cartridges end up in landfills in the US alone. When you consider Europe, Canada, Australia, Japan, China, and any number of other countries, then you can see why recycling YOUR used printer ink cartridges makes sense. Some drug stores and office supply houses have their own program for refilling the cartridges at a fraction of the price of new ones.

In summary, these six tips only scratch the surface. Brainstorm and try to think on ways that you can save energy and money. Together we can make a difference in the world today. More ideas are available at [http://www.go-green-blog.com/]How To Go Green.

Here are eight simple tips to help you to Go Green and save money at the same time.

Buy locally produced food as often as possible. You will be helping the neighborhood economy, and you will be helping to shrink the hidden costs involved in food production, transport and distribution. The average American meal travels some 1,500 miles before a knife or fork touches it. That means larger freight charges and fuel expenses. You can help to save on these, and save your own cash too, by buying locally grown produce. Farmer’s Markets are perfect for this. The quality is great and the price is great too. And because it’s local, it doesn’t travel halfway across the nation to reach you! In fact, you can reduce the amount of traveling your food has to do by an impressive 80% at least! The other benefit is that not only does it enhance your local economy, but you are encouraging more people to begin farming. With so many people out of work now, many people are looking for alternatives to factory work. Maybe more of us need to go back to work on small family farms.

Print less or not at all, if possible. Paper doesn’t grow on trees – it is trees! And we are killing them with our printing. If you really have to print, then consider using duplex, or double-sided printing to save half your paper needs. You’ll also save a tree besides all of the resources needed to convert the wood pulp into paper.

Install a rain barrel to catch rain water from the roof. This is an old concept dating back centuries, but a great one. The rain is free of charge after all and it is excellent for watering plants and flowers since it doesn’t contain excessive chemicals such as chlorine. You can save on water bills by utilizing this idea and your plants will be much happier!

You can create a composting bin for all the vegetable and plant material you might ordinarily throw away. Leaves from trees in autumn, as well as anything pruned or cut off can all be composted. Good compost will give first-rate soil material for nourishing young plants next season. It’s a smart way of recycling. Look to the kitchen as well for decomposable materials. Food waste will compost without difficulty and it’s an ideal way to dispose of it. Composting food and vegetable material turns it into nutrient-rich soil. You can buy composting bins and other items, but it’s much more fulfilling and cheaper to build it yourself.

Plant drought-tolerant trees and shrubs in your garden. These include crepe myrtle, ash, or ginkgo, and shrubs from rosemary to barberry and juniper. Why? With global warming we might have drier conditions. If you have plants competing for increasingly drier soil, you will have problems. Drought-tolerant tree and shrub species will survive better and not demand as much water. You will save on the water bill and decrease your water usage.

Cook once and eat twice. This is a great way to save all round by cooking two meals at the same time. If your oven can hold two chickens, then why not roast two instead of one every time? In a conventional oven, two chickens will cook in the same amount of time that one will. Now, do the math… You will cut your cooking time in half, saving electricity or cooking gas – and guess what happens to all the money saved! Yep, it stays right in your pocket. You also save a lot of time when you come to prepare your next meal. Keep in mind, it doesn’t have to be just chickens. This will work with turkeys, roast beef, etc. And in summer will avoid heating the kitchen on the off days.

In summary, these eight items barely scratch the surface. Brainstorm and think of ways that you can save energy and money. Working together we can make a difference in our world today. More ideas are available at How To Go Green.

Most coffee lovers when presented with so many different blends to choose from don’t usually question the origins of their favorite beverage or what is the environmental impact of their favorite brew. But today there is a growing awareness of the need to protect natural resources as much as possible. Because of this awareness more and more coffee companies are offering organic blends in part to lessen their impact on the environment and in part to capitalize on the organic craze and meet market demands.

Why Organic

Because coffee is grown so far away from it’s end user, most people don’t know that one of the by products of coffee production is a large quantity of pesticides. The coffee plants are “protected” by very strong pesticides and these pesticides then leach into the ground water and surrounding soils. These strong pesticides kill off plant and animal life. After harvesting the coffee beans are treated with even more chemicals during processing.

Organic coffee is grown differently. The coffee producers don’t treat the plants with chemicals. They are grown under the shade of indigenous trees that provide homes for the local birds and other small animals. These birds then in turn eliminate the need for pesticides by feasting on the bugs that the pesticides would kill. By purchasing organic coffee you can do your part providing habitat for birds and animals that would otherwise not have a home.

Surprisingly, organic coffee is not priced so high that the average person can’t afford it like so many other organic products. The majority of coffee producers offer organic blends from the milder breakfast blends to the richer, darker dessert blends at an affordable price, which is in reach for most of their customers.

Organic coffee is available to purchase at most local grocery stores. Local health food stores have had organically grown coffee for several years, but now it is readily available at the supermarket. Almost every major producer has an organic, so there shouldn’t be a problem in finding an organic alternative to fit your tastes perfectly. If you are a coffee lover already then you can do your part to help the environment by switching to organic coffee today. If you aren’t a coffee lover you can buy your coffee loving friends organically grown coffee and help out the environment at the same time.
